The History of Gould Farm

In 1913, Will and Agnes Gould borrowed $1,000 and made a down payment on a farm in Monterey, a rural community in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. Eight guests and family members arrived with the Goulds and quickly discovered that an endless amount of work needed to be done just to make the property livable.  Pooling their energy and imagination, they took on the work and shared the tasks. Others soon appeared, offering their labor in exchange for respite from their own trials and tribulations. The strength and comfort they found in the community that began to develop became the foundation for a Gould Farm that offers unstinting kindness and respect for others.

Today, Gould Farm combines clinical practice with valued work and community life, but Will Gould’s vision remains intact.  His philosophy is part of everyday life at the Farm: the belief that every person has something valuable to contribute to the community, regardless of the mental or emotional limitations they may face.  Healing happens in this environment.
