A Life of Sharing Republished

We are delighted to announce the upcoming republication of A Life of Sharing, William J. McKee’s heartfelt account of Gould Farm’s history and mission. Originally published decades ago, this book has been out of print for years, but thanks to the dedication of McKee’s daughter, Katie Mendelsohn, it is making its return.

Born and raised at Gould Farm, Bill McKee had a deep personal connection to its story. The son of former Farm directors, he grew up immersed in the rhythms of community life. His experiences, reflections, and historical insights come together in A Life of Sharing, a book that captures the Farm’s enduring spirit of hospitality, healing, and shared work.

In the newly written introduction, Katie Mendelsohn recalls her own lifelong ties to Gould Farm—how the Farm shaped her childhood, how generations of McKees have been woven into its fabric, and how her father’s passion for storytelling led to the creation of this book. As she writes, “Growing up spending long periods of time at Gould Farm in the 1950s and 60s means I have lots of good memories from that time. Of weekly morning breakfasts cooked down by the brook, of lively square dances held every Saturday evening, of dinners every night at set tables with napkin rings, of sitting in Adirondack chairs on Main House lawn tipping and tailing bushels of beans…” Her words paint a rich portrait of the warmth and tradition that define the Farm.

The McKee family’s connection to Gould Farm spans six generations, a testament to the impact this unique community has on those who experience its transformative work. A Life of Sharing is more than a history—it is a love letter to a place that fosters hope, renewal, and a sense of belonging.
