Bridging Care Through Collaboration

We’re thrilled to announce that Gould Farm will join the four other farm-based therapeutic communities—Spring Lake Ranch, Hopewell, Rose Hill Center, and CooperRiis Healing Community—at the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) Annual Conference this May 2025 in Detroit. For the first time, our five organizations will present at a conference together, sharing insights into the unique therapeutic farm model, our shared outcomes, and the ways we complement one another in supporting adults with serious mental illness.

Our session, titled “The Power of Farm-Based Therapeutic Healing Communities,” will bring together executive directors from each program. Together, we’ll delve into the transformative potential of combining meaningful work, structured community living, and clinical practices in natural, restorative settings. By exploring both our commonalities and differences, we aim to illuminate how each of our programs contributes to fostering recovery for individuals navigating challenges such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression.

What Is an Educational Consultant?

The IECA Conference is a gathering of educational consultants—professionals dedicated to helping families and students navigate educational and therapeutic decisions. These experts often work independently, providing personalized guidance to identify the best school, program, or treatment fit for their clients. Within this broader field lies a specialized group known as therapeutic consultants who focus on bridging the gaps in our mental health care system.

Therapeutic consultants play a critical role in helping families navigate the often-overwhelming landscape of mental health care. When a loved one is struggling with a serious mental illness, it can be challenging to find appropriate, effective care. Therapeutic consultants provide expertise and advocacy, assessing needs, researching options, and connecting families to programs like ours. They serve as essential guides in moments of crisis, ensuring individuals receive the compassionate, evidence-based support they deserve.

Why Farm-Based Therapeutic Communities Matter

Farm-based therapeutic communities like Gould Farm have long recognized the value of holistic, person-centered care. By integrating meaningful work on the farm—whether tending animals, gardening, or crafting artisanal cheese—with the structure of communal living and individualized clinical care, we create environments where healing flourishes. Our focus on relationships and connection fosters self-worth and purpose, enabling individuals to reclaim their lives.

What makes this collaboration truly remarkable is our shared commitment to fostering recovery while honoring the unique qualities of each program. For example:

  • Gould Farm emphasizes relational and community-based recovery grounded in work therapy.

  • Spring Lake Ranch combines work programs with opportunities for increased independence.

  • Hopewell focuses on creative expression alongside farming activities.

  • CooperRiis offers clinically intensive care integrated with healing community practices.

  • Rose Hill incorporates vocational training to build life skills for sustainable independence.

Together, these programs form a network of healing spaces that provide hope and dignity to marginalized populations, helping individuals rebuild their lives.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited to share our collective insights with the educational consulting community at IECA 2025. We hope this session will deepen understanding of how farm-based therapeutic communities uniquely support individuals with serious mental illness while highlighting the vital role of therapeutic consultants in connecting families to programs like ours.

This collaborative effort reflects the broader spirit of our work: bridging gaps in care, cultivating connection, and fostering transformation through community.
